The Arrival

This morning started off as an adventure!

I almost did not make it in time for my connection. My flight from Canada landed 20 minutes late, then my luggage was MIA somewhere in Keflavik.

My second flight was from a different airport. To get there, I had purchased a ticket for a shuttle bus. I had missed my original ticket time because of the delays and had to wait half an hour for the next one. That didn’t stress me too much, as I still had a bit of time to get to my flight. But — the bus company said that (contrary to the website) my ticket wouldn’t actually take me to the airport! Instead, they would have to drop me off at their terminal and I would have to purchase another ticket for the 3 minute drive to the airport.

While I was at the service desk, waiting to find out if I could get a lift to the airport in time for my flight, this guy showed up out of nowhere and offered to drive me and a Brazilian girl with his minibus.

I got to the airport about 10 minutes before takeoff and the check-in officer was amused with how worried I was. He told me, “We are relaxed here!”

He wasn’t joking: there was a grand total of 20 people at the airport and a group of them even showed up just when boarding began!

It all worked out in the end. We flew into the sunrise, saw breathtaking views, and finally arrived in Akureyri. The big snowflakes and fjord views made me feel like I was in a snow globe.

I hopped in a taxi, with a driver who didn’t know any English. Found a place that would store my luggage for free, and now I am sipping on coffee and editing photos on my phone as I wait for stores to open at noon.
