Originally starting off as an alcoholic, whiskey-based drink in the 1800s, milkshakes eventually became the ice creamy treats we know today through decades of experimentation and technological innovation. Flavours and toppings are endless, but vanilla remains one of the most popular and iconic flavours.
You might recall that I have partnered with Loblaws to help promote their 2018 Canadian Food Trends. June’s trend highlight is Occasional Indulgence, where Canadians throw out the rule book on traditional food prep for fun and creative meals. With this theme as my inspiration, I can’t think of a better way to celebrate National Vanilla Milkshake Day than by indulging in homemade Freak Shakes!
Freak Shakes are those wild milkshakes that are rocking up Instagram. Full of crazy toppings, these treats end up more like an extravagant dessert than just a drink.
Summer is just rolling in… which means that strawberry season has begun! I wanted to create a seemingly decadent milkshake that celebrates this yummy fruit, as well as the fresh herbs that are also in season. Strawberry, mint, coconut, and vanilla, my creation reminded me of a scene from Sofia Coppola’s Marie Antoinette, so I have nicknamed my dessert Petit Trianon!

The base was a mixture of coconut milk, 2% lactose-free milk, ice, and vanilla extract. For sweetness, I added PC Black Label Strawberry Fruit Spread and mixes it.
Cake:
Dip angel food cakes into fruit spread. Line bottom edge with whipped cream and place on coconut chips. Add more whipped cream into the center of the cake and place a strawberry on top
Garnish:
Dip top of glass into strawberry jam, then dip into medium coconut shavings to create a fun rim around the glass. Pour in milkshake base. Top with cake, cookies, Pocky, whipped cream, fresh strawberries, fresh mint, and coconut shavings. Add a drink parasol and a re-usable straw and enjoy!
